Riksgransen, the world’s northernmost ski resort, 200km north of the Arctic Circle, is known principally for its extensive off-piste skiing and actually lists the most important on its ski trail map.

Riksgransen Ski Resort.

Only the eternal darkness of early winter prevents the slopes being open right the way through from October until June. Riksgransen ski season does not really get started until February when there are sufficient daylight hours. By midsummers’s day, the end of the season, the sun will not have set for over a month.

Getting To Riksgränsen:
Kiruna: 130km (81 miles).
Domestic flights between Stockholm and Kiruna.
Taxi and bus service available.
Riksgränsen to Narvik; 50km (31 miles).

Pistes: 29: 4 Green Pistes, 4 Blue Pistes, 7 Red Pistes, 14 Black Pistes.


Main Advantages:
Riksgränsen: Summer skiing; good value heli-skiing, plenty of off-piste skiing.


Drawbacks:
Riksgränsen: limited apès-ski; very few hotels.

Nearby there are peaks with 700m to 1,000m of descent and the Kebnekaise massif which offers nearly 1,500 metres of vertical descent. 200 mountains offer over 5,000 sq km of ski terrain; hence it is possible to find untracked snow until the end of May.
